Schlosspark Charlottenburg

The Schlossgarten Charlottenburg is a multifaceted setting of royal garden art, which wants to snatch and inspire its visitors from the hustle and bustle of the federal capital. It was created from 1695 by the clever and cosmopolitan Electress Sophie Charlotte. She commissioned Siméon Godeau, a student of the famous Versailles court gardener André Le Nôtre, to create the most modern garden in the German-speaking world here. From then on she could travel by water in magnificent pleasure yachts from the Berlin Palace to Charlottenburg, to celebrate glamorous festivals with music, dance and fireworks in the garden, or to philosophize with Leibniz along the precious flowers through the garden.

The baroque complex, designed in the French style, soon experienced its first expansion, because Sophie Charlotte, from 1701 the first queen in Prussia, had to expand her court. Frederick the Great tended the artistically staged complex, while his successors, in accordance with the fashion, created a landscaped garden based on English models, which has been preserved in large parts of the complex to this day. After the destruction of the Second World War, the atmosphere of the former baroque garden near the palace was restored, the picturesque images of the landscape garden were restored and new areas for contemporary use were created, for example with a children’s playground.

Today, the walk in the Charlottenburg Palace Garden leads through more than 300 years of garden art - and to other buildings that are worth a visit: To the Belvedere , the little garden palace built near the Spree with valuable KPM porcelain, to the mausoleum of Queen Luise and to the New Pavilion Karl Friedrich Schinkels, suitably surrounded by a recently reinterpreted ornamental garden.
